The Sainte-Chapelle, built by Louis IX in the 1240s to house relics of the Passion, is among the supreme achievements of Gothic architecture. Its upper chapel is enclosed by fifteen towering stained-glass windows depicting over a thousand biblical scenes. The chapel stands within the medieval Palais de la Cité, now law courts.
