Rome
Ostia Antica preserves the excavated port city at the mouth of the Tiber that supplied ancient Rome, abandoned and silted over as the coastline shifted. Paved streets run past a theatre, baths with black-and-white mosaics, warehouses, and the brick apartment blocks called insulae. It rivals Pompeii for the picture it gives of Roman daily life.
