Venice
The Arsenale was the great shipyard of the Venetian Republic, once the largest industrial complex in Europe, where galleys were mass-produced on an assembly line. Its long brick rope-factory, the Corderie, and surrounding sheds are now a principal venue of the Venice Biennale. The fortified gateway, guarded by ancient stone lions, marks the entrance.
